Preparing for Superintelligence: Why AI Training Is Now a Leadership Priority

Published 07 Oct, 2026

Superintelligence may still be on the horizon, but the organisations that will benefit from it are building the skills, governance and leadership for it today.

Superintelligence (SI) describes AI systems that would outperform the best human experts across almost every field, from scientific research to strategy. Leading AI laboratories now speak openly about it as a long-term goal, and policymakers worldwide are debating how to govern it. No one can say exactly when, or whether, it will arrive.

What is certain is the direction of travel. Each new generation of AI takes on more complex work, makes more decisions and operates with less supervision. Organisations that wait for superintelligence before acting will find the gap impossible to close. Those that build AI capability step by step, starting now, will be ready to use each advance safely and profitably.

From narrow AI to AGI to superintelligence

AI capability is usually described in three stages, and organisations need to prepare for each in turn.

Today's narrow AI already transforms single tasks. Artificial general intelligence (AGI) would match skilled people across most work, and superintelligence would go beyond them. The skills, data and governance built for narrow AI are the same ones every later stage will demand.

What SI-readiness means for organisations

SI-readiness is not a technology purchase; it is a set of organisational capabilities built over several years. Four foundations matter most.

  1. Governance and risk. Clear policies on who may deploy AI, for what, and with what oversight. This includes controlling unsanctioned "shadow AI" and preparing for tightening regulation.
  2. Data and infrastructure. Clean, well-governed data and secure cloud platforms. Advanced AI is only as reliable as the data it learns from.
  3. Workforce skills. Every employee needs AI literacy; specialists need the ability to build, test and supervise AI agents and automated workflows.
  4. Leadership and decision-making. Executives must judge where AI should decide, where it should advise, and where humans must stay in control.

Organisations that invest in all four can adopt each new generation of AI quickly. Those that skip governance or skills tend to stall in pilots, or take on risks they cannot see.
