Leadership for Administrative Leaders

Leadership for Administrative Leaders

Are You Leadership Material?

Have you ever wondered what it takes to step into a leadership role? When I ask this question, common answers include hard work, networking, and education. While these are indeed important, relying solely on time, chance, or others to create opportunities can leave you waiting indefinitely. True leaders understand the immense power of self-belief.

The Core of Self-Belief

Self-belief transcends mere confidence in your expertise and experience. That kind of confidence can waver in unfamiliar territory and may hinder your openness to new ideas, listening to others, and taking necessary risks. Real self-belief is rooted in timeless wisdom, not in ego-boosting psychological tricks.

The Essence of True Leadership

Authentic self-belief, self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-respect are built on a fair and humble appreciation of your unique knowledge, talents, and qualities. Equally important is recognizing that you are a fallible human being, part of an interconnected web of life. You are a cog in the wheel—important but ineffective if isolated.

While this may sound philosophical, true leaders are known for their self-respect and humility. It takes maturity to balance the paradoxes inherent in leadership. Leaders must aim high and be visionary, yet remain grounded and aware of their limits. They need to be proactive but also adaptable, knowing their worth while understanding that real progress requires collective effort.

The Role of Stewardship in Leadership

Being a steward in a leadership role is the hallmark of great leaders. Most great leaders are acutely aware of their personal limitations and do not claim to have all the answers. However, they recognize that life calls them to step up and serve a purpose greater than their personal concerns. Parenting often serves as a crucial training ground for leadership. When we set aside our own agendas, fears, and egos, we step into a larger vision that includes using our gifts to benefit others, whether they are children, team members, or customers.

The Paradox of Giving and Receiving

Paradoxically, putting aside our egos and focusing on serving others often leads to the expansion of our personal gifts. It’s as if the intention to give to others brings us more to share. This can include increased intuition, inspiration, innovative ideas, wisdom, empathy, improved communication, cooperation from others, heightened energy, motivation, and eventually, recognition and rewards. For true leaders, these acknowledgments serve as confirmations of their path rather than their primary motivation.
