Managing People, Change & Engagement in the Post-COVID Workplace: Structural, Strategic, and Significant Change

Managing People, Change & Engagement in the Post-COVID Workplace: Structural, Strategic, and Significant Change

The way we work will be forever changed because of COVID-19. This crisis has had a dreadful impact on many workplaces, while other workplaces have even seen positive changes. The impact on all workplaces is structural, strategic, and significant.

Many workplaces are already reviewing their flexible working as they have found benefits in virtual working and meetings. Many employees are also considering the “old ways” of doing things and questioning the “new normal.” This response is typical following a crisis and should be expected. But it also needs to be managed and understood.

One example is the use of virtual interviewing during the Pandemic. Online interviewing has been shown to have advantages and disadvantages. However, interviewing post-COVID will never be the same, and we will see an increased use of virtual interviewing.

There are lessons to be learned and shared about the impact that COVID-19 had on workplaces worldwide. Both in terms of crisis management and people management. COVID-19 has caused many changes, changes in employees’ long-term mental and physical health, and an impact on career development and engagement and teams.

Organisations have had to make rapid changes to how they operate, including how and where jobs are carried out and planning for or returning staff to work safely. Workers, in turn, must navigate new ways of working and adapt to changing circumstances in their personal life.

Some existing roles are already disappearing, and new ones are emerging. There will be a greater need for employees training and development to fill skills gaps and develop new competencies. Whether there will be more virtual or, hybrid training is yet to be seen.

All Leaders and managers must understand the impact of COVID-19 on the workforce. The leadership of change is more critical than ever. This requires an understanding of how people resist change and what leaders can do to promote the smooth implementation of change programmes.

Other areas that are emerging are an increased awareness of the management and support of employee mental health. This includes understanding the impact of crisis and trauma on people, return-to-work following a crisis, and developing resilience in oneself and employees. Resilience is an important concept when considering people factors in a crisis, such as COVID-19. Resilience is the ability to recover from adverse events by using positive emotions. Some people are better at this and others, due to many factors.

All of these crucial issues are coved in our new course Managing People, Change, and Engagement in the Post-COVID Workplace.
