Advanced Strategic Management
Moving from operational decision-making to having to make strategic decisions is a big step that can seem daunting.
Strategic decisions are not straightforward for a number of reasons. Firstly, they can affect the whole organisation so they should not be taken lightly. Very often, strategic decisions are made without good information because they concern the future and, therefore, involve a high level of uncertainty which increases with time.
Strategic decisions, in addition to not having much data available, often have few, if any, precedents to work from.
In addition to being difficult to make, strategic decisions can have significant implications because they often lead to significant change in an organisation that requires a large commitment of resource to implement and can then be difficult to reverse.
This combination of difficulty and impact explains why strategic decisions can appear daunting. However, they are necessary and choosing to avoid making them is not an option – no decision is still a decision. So, if they have to be made, it makes sense to try to get better at making them.
