Last week, we successfully conducted our inspiring Project Appraisal & Analysis course in the heart of London. Participants engaged in vibrant discussions, exploring the potential impacts of Brexit on London and the UK. With the announcement of the next Prime Minister on the horizon, these insights are timely and crucial for strategic planning.
Learning from History
The course also took a fascinating look at the Titanic’s maiden voyage as a case study in risk management. The Titanic, once the largest ship built, sank just two hours and forty minutes after hitting an iceberg. White Star Line’s handling of risks throughout the project lifecycle offers invaluable lessons. For instance:
- The officers had only 37 seconds to react after the iceberg was spotted. First Officer Murdoch ordered “hard a-starboard,” aiming to steer the ship left, but the Titanic’s course was insufficiently altered.
- The ship was touted as unsinkable yet lacked sufficient lifeboats, contributing to the tragedy. A lifeboat drill canceled by Captain Smith might have saved more lives if conducted.
These lessons underscore the importance of risk evaluation and contingency planning, topics thoroughly analyzed during our course.
